Let's try to make some sense out of scents. For years, fishermen on Mega Bites have been applying this and that to their lures in an effort to catch more fish.
To this day, I still do not know if fish scents work. I know that anglers who dabble in scents catch fish after using it. But was the bite due to the oily mixture? Or did the angler just happen to cast his lure to the right spot at the right time?
A lot of scientific research has been done on scents. And I'm sure most of that was paid for…

Despite what you might hear about the weather in Northern Ohio we do have a lot of bright, sunny fishing days on Lake Erie.
That's why I always encourage my customers to bring dark, polarized sunglasses with them on their charter. Without them, a fisherman likely will end the day with a gigantic headache caused by squinting all day.
According to eye doctors, polarized lenses contain filters that reduce glare from reflected light.
Thanks to the invasion of zebra mussels a decade ago the lake's wa…

A plain jig is an odd lure. It really does not resemble anything in nature that a fish would eat.
But dress it up with some color, deer hair, and perhaps a worm, minnow or grub and it becomes a formidable weapon in any fisherman's arsenal. It has been that way for thousands of years.
Jigs were used by the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. Even cave dwellers carved jig-looking lures out of bone to catch their fish. So folks today are just carrying on a long tradition.
Lake Erie anglers use a varie…

The Ohio Division of Wildlife deserves a big pat on the back for its successful efforts to bring quality steelhead fishing to Lake Erie and its tributaries.
Take a look at the photos. All of these fish were caught in streams from Vermilion, OH to the Pennsylvania line last fall and over the winter.
Combine the stream and lake action and it's clear that Ohio now offers a very nice trout fishery based on an aggressive stocking program. The lake and most of the streams are too warm and unsuited f…

After the high winds, rain, and storms blew through the walleyes are finally starting to bite with fury. Water temp is around 42.5 degrees and we started hitting the Lake Erie walleye near Turtle Reef. The walleyes were biting slow, but with a little patience and a steady bottom jigging presentation they were gulping down the lake shiners. Here's a few pics...good luck.

Walleyes are being caught on Locust Reef, Toosaint, Turtle and the Maumee Bay. Even in the Maumee River fishn has been slow to nothing due to high water and extremely cold wate…
